Halifax Regional Municipality celebrates the 100th anniversary of the official opening of the Memorial Tower on Natal Day, August 6th
and you are invited.
One hundred years ago, on August 14, 1912, the Memorial Tower at the Dingle in Halifax, Nova Scotia was officially opened to the public in the presence of Canada’s Governor General, the Duke of Connaught, and Sir Sandford Fleming. Fleming was instrumental in having this tower built to commemorate the 150th anniversary of representative government in Nova Scotia (1758-1908).
Thanks to funding from Halifax Regional Municipality Special Events, a special celebration will take place at the Dingle in HRM’s Fleming Park on Natal Day, August 6, 2012 from 11 am to 2 pm which will include a re-enactment of some of the original events of that opening day in 1912. The re-opening of the Memorial Tower will take place at a special ceremony at12 noon with a sail past from the Armdale Yacht Club. Meet Sir Sandford Fleming, the Duke of Connaught, Mayor Frederick Bligh and other dignitaries from 1912 as they stroll through Fleming Park on Natal Day.
The Mainland South Heritage Society and Friends of Sir Sandford Fleming Park, with members of HRM Council, Recreation Department and staff, invite residents and visitors of all ages to dress in 1912 fashion and enjoy some of the activities taking place at the Dingle that day. The Bedford Brass Quintet and local choirs will perform music from the 1912 era. The band Spectrum will be part of the entertainment. Pick up your souvenir commemorative pin and a new brochure on the history of the tower. Visit the Adventure Earth Centre (old stone church) for photographic displays, tea, coffee and birthday cake. Enjoy Heritage Walks, children’s games, and food (hotdogs, lemonade, ice cream) and it’s all free. Be part of this historic celebration.
